Furniture in Thailand

Millions of homes today have furniture and many more still want to acquire more. A recent trip to Thailand wowed me with the quality of furniture they produce and I almost could not believe the craftsmanship of Thai hands in woodcarving.

After about two hours of drive out of Bangkok's metropolis, our tourist guide woke us up from our sleep and announced our arrival at the Royal Thai Handicraft. He said this furniture plant showcased Thai's ingenuity in woodcarving. The entrance was decorated with vines of lavender flower that gave it its "green" look.

To my amazement, as I looked to the left, a man in his 40's smiled at me as he held in his hands a chisel and on the other a small hammer or more like a gavel. He motioned that I took a look at his creation and the moment I did, I was astonished. How in the world did they do this?

The masterpiece that was safely hung on one side and stood out among the rest not only due to the spotlight that gave it much aristocracy, but also due to its sheer splendor and beauty. It was a huge trunk of teakwood that used to look nothing but brown and dark brown specks of wood - no beauty, no significance, and no story. But the moment the man's hands began to painstakingly work on the block of wood, life came out and its story began.

When you look from afar, the work was about forest life with tiny elephants, and monkeys and other forest animals. Then from this 3D like visionary, you would notice that there were butterflies that seemed suspended in air, only attached to a leaf by less than a millimeter of wood. Looking closely, you would find even more interesting facets like vines that intertwined with a tree branch and then a small bird of sparrow figure clinging securely on a tree twig.

I spent minute upon minute examining the minute detail of their genius and exclaiming, "wow" to each new find. Looking around I found more and more astonishing works of art. In this part of the world, furniture is not just a tool to earn; it simply was life for them. This was their expression of themselves; this was their art and their culture.

Each magnificent piece had a price tag though, and the tags hefty! One center table cost 00.00 and yet another living room was priced at a whopping ,500.00. To some, price wasn't what this work was all about. Rather, it's the story and the life that came out of each masterpiece that was shipped out of Thailand. Along with that was that firebrand of excellence and quality that also embodied who they really were at the very confines of their comfort zones. What your home looks like, with all furniture and additives that you can afford, are expressions of your own self, your desires and your living room or bedroom may very well be your own masterpiece.
